About

Angelica Tome

Although born in San Francisco, Angelica Tome was raised in New York for most of her life. Coming from a single-parent home, she found solace in the world of art. From crayons to paint, from drawing to writing, from traditional media to computer graphics, Angelica has tried her hand in everything available to her. It was in high school that a teacher bestowed upon her the idea that art could be a career path, and not just a hobby. From then on she has pursued a career geared towards the arts, and is enjoying the path she has set out on.

Artist Statement

I was never the sporty, athletic type. I didn’t play soccer, lacrosse, or track. I was in the girl scouts for maybe a year, if that, before the troop just sort of disbanded. I wasn’t mathematically or scientifically minded, and although I enjoyed history, I was bad at memorizing. One thing I was good at, though was the arts. At the age of three I found myself drawing green flowers growing out of pink soil. From an early age I enjoyed recreating the things I saw and making them in my own image. During summers spent cooped up inside my house, to my awkward high school years; my ability to utilize my creativity has helped me throughout my entire life.

Being creative doesn’t guarantee a successful outcome every time. Often times I start my process by just doodling. Inspiration isn’t always promised, and though it’s what most artists signal as their driving force I find that sometimes you must create even when you have nothing. That means sometimes starting a project without any ideas in mind. Once I get going I find it hard to stop. It’s at this point that I start looking at reference, revising my ideas, adding onto what I have or taking things away. This is when I decide to stick with the project or to drop it a start a new one. I don’t want to waste time working on something that isn’t motivating me; I’d rather move onto something I do care for then be stuck in an artistic slump. Even when I find myself uninspired I push to always do something creative. Nine times out of ten, those simple doodles will take on a life of their own, and grow into something more. My motto is to always start, no matter the circumstances.

Out of every medium I could be working with to express my creativity, I’ve found comfort on programs like Maya and Substance Painter and Photoshop. I believe it’s because they are able to combine many of the aspects of art that I love; story-telling, bringing imagination to life, and allowing others to experience your art first hand. Out of every creative endeavor I’ve experimented with, telling stories through my art has always been a prominent aspect of mine. I want to weave a tale for whatever I’m working on at that time, and game art allows me to do just that through character design to asset creation. I can more accurately represent my ideas in a 3D, playable space. Moreover, I can allow people to experience my creations first hand; to walk in a space that is inhabited my assets that I have modelled and build; textured and colored and pored hours into. I work in this medium because it allows me to fulfill all aspects I love about art.

The idea that my art will be used and enjoyed by others is something that makes me realize just how influential I can be. I’m able to tell stories I otherwise may not get to experience because of the industry I’m in. If I can make a career out of what I love, there is no greater joy than that. If I can make others happy while making myself happy, it is even better. And if I can inspire others through what I choose to do, I will be happy. I can make them laugh and cry through my art, and that is all I can ask for.
